in the past few years, i have accumulated purses that were more than precious and meant a whole lot to me. it’s not a parent-to-child relationship kind, but somehow it’s close to that. lately, i felt the pressure to share my passion with hermes, a luxury brand that’s taking the word “luxury” to the next level.
people always ask me what my passion is - others talk about art, travels, animals - it’s mindboggling sometimes to really think deep and hard and say something fancy but when i think about it, it’s not what you are passionate about, it’s about how much degree of passion you have for it.
before walking into hermes several years ago, i said to my husband that to have a hermes kelly is the ultimate thing for me. it’s like equating it to acquiring a classic chanel tweed jacket. luckily, it was not difficult to convince him. first thing they showed me was an olive green kelly 28 in chevre (goat) leather with yellow gold hardware. i was in love almost instantly! as the lady was wrapping it up, she looked at my husband tenderly and said “i am definitely sure your wife will enjoy this”. for him that translates to “thank you for coming in, you’ve just created a monster!”. he had that worried look on his face when we left the store, he knew that i will have a special bond with that lady that will last for years ahead.
sure enough, a few weeks later the next call i got was a “special birkin” availability - it was size 30 in gold with palladium hardware in togo leather. my husband reminded me, “you said the kelly was the ultimate!” - i gave him the brightest smile i have and he knew then and there that i was lying. that second trip to the store was the beginning of a fun charade with hermes!
this post was inspired by the ultimate bag collector, the bag snob. and to all who has the passion for shoes, watches, jewelry, charity work, dogs etc. - keep the passion burning and never lose focus!
